Apple Ipad -Don't Judge a Book by it's lack of Cover

I own three Ipods, a very sleek and expensive MacBookPro as well as an Ipone 3g so I am clearly a Mac camper.  I, like the rest of the herd was excited when I heard about the new hot toy that Jobs and Co. officially opens to the public tomorrow, the Ipad.

Is this device incredible?  In short , yes, but remember this, Tekkies are sometimes akin to Casanova in their fickle nature.  They will adore and love you passionately for a while, but sooner rather than later they are off to the newest flavor of the month.  When making this purchase think about it's value to you six months down the road rather than simply an impulse buy.

One doesn't think of Apple as chipmakers, but perhaps with this device in mind, they purchased a chip making company a few years back.  The result is high speed functionality without the heat nor weight of it's predessors. This device is sleek, sexy, fast and a real eye turner.  It will also give you the wonderful experience of turning real pages as you read your favorite book or periodical.  The hi-res. 9.7" screen also gives one a more pc like experience of viewing the web, unlike the Iphone.

Who is this for?

Ultra-mobile Professionals who don't require the power of a MacBook Pro will love this.  I will never forget growing up in Brooklyn when folks still allowed travelling salesmen in your home to display their wares.  They were real-life Willy Lomans from their wrinkled gray trench coats to their sagging shoulders and overloaded  bags of salesman samples.  To think that my mom still proudly displays her attractively bound complete set of Encyclopedia Brittanica's in her living room warrants a chuckle as one single obsolete volume easily outweights one Ipad several times over, without providing one tength of the Ipad's usefulness. The salesmen of today's generation can stand proudly now and show off all their wares with the 1.6 pound Ipad 3g.  Real-Estate agents can become that much more efficient by showing their clients 360 degree views of promising homes before getting out of the car.  This will also help researchers and mobile news teams emmensley with GPS, Email, The Web and Periodicals and few clicks away.

Don't buy the Undercoating

I bought my first new car in 1994 and it was what they used to call a Fix or Repair Daily mobile, A Ford Mustang.  Under the lights, my cherry red Mustang was too good to be true for 13k.  After all the must haves such a ultraexpensive 1994 phone plan, car rugs, spoilers and undercoating the final cost jumped up considerably.  While the Mustang and Ipad are wonderful innovations; simply look at the entire picture and eliminate any unneccessary features.

At $499 the base Ipad with Wi-fi is a decent deal.  However a true tech pro will desire the full blown 64 gig , 3 gig plus wi-fi model, but remember while the Ipad's computing, mobility and gaming ability are impressive, the cost also will turn heads.  For the top of the line unit, which will be available in late April, one will initially spend $829.

Throw in a keyboard, a sexy case, Apple Care, book/magazine subscriptions, the cost of monthly 3g service  and perhaps Mobile Me you are looking at another $700 bucks during the first year alone.

Apps Please

Of course there will be apps; a recent tally suggests a number near 200k, but which ones will you really need or use.  I think Netflix, Email, Facebook, Linked In, YouTube are sure fire winners as well as gaming and map based programs.

The lack of a built in camera will limit one's ability to use Skype and mobile uploads, but we all know that come late summer, a newer less costly version will include a more features, less bugs and a camera.

Final Thoughts

The intial surge will make this an instant hit, but that doesn't mean you must or should purchase one during a recession.   Control your urges and wait for the next version to hit the stores.  In the interim prepare for the introduction of this new device by simplifying your life.  Sell or donate your older desktops, handhelds and laptops.  The cost of new software, additional ram and virus protection will render these nearly obsolete anyway so declutter your life before introducing a new gizmo into the fold.  In a terrific irony this could be one of those revolutionary devices that bring the world to your fingertips, while at the same time cutting you off from the real world around you.

Remember use everything in moderation; even at 1.5 pounds.

FLIP ULTRA HD CAM-REVIEWED BY JOE APPIO FOR TECH IN 60

In the 1970's Karl Malden used to pitch American Express Cards. Like Karl Malden, I never leave home without my Flip Ultra Hd cam.  For under $200 with a case and HDMI cable, this wonderful videocamera gives you two hours of HD quality and the ease of use.

STYLIZED AND PRACTICAL

Thanks to the pop-out usb, you can upload and charge your device without any external cables to lose. It's attractive black rubber and brushed steel design also ensures a good grip in the slipperiest of situations as well as durability in harsh conditions.  Unlike the Ipod, the device allows you to replace the rechargeable battery pack while giving you the look and protection of a sealed unit.

ALWAYS WITH YOU WHEN NEWS HAPPENS

Put it in your pocket, jacket or purse and no worries until an important event occurs.  until it is time to capture an event.  TV networks have also outfitted their personnel with these devices so everyone becomes a cameraman when major breaking news hits.  It has revolutionized the speed of delivering content as the entire world is now able to capture and upload quality video in minutes.

You can upload to your laptop or Epson Photo-Viewer with a few clicks and be ready to hit the road in no time.  Of course it is YouTube and web friendly and shoots surprisingly well in low-light situations.

Videos can be deleted from the device selectlvely so you may keep the ones that you want to view quickly over and over again within reach at all times.

MY RECOMMENDATIONS

The sound is good for anything within 12 feet; a port for a wireless mic would be a terrific add on to future generations of this device.  It would be fantastic if this also was able to import video from your DVR for viewing on the plane or on the road.  The Kodak Competitor does offer a SD slot instead of a bult in drive as well as a wireless mic port. Nevertheless, I have grown accustomed to the Flip.

MARKETING JUGGERNAUT

The PR and marketing folks have done one heck of a job making The Flip ubiquitous worldwide, joining the dream-team of Xerox, Polaroid, Scotch Tape as elite innovations. There are many other competitors in this realm, but for cost, quality, ease of use and style, The Flip Ultra HD should be on your favorite things list , not only on Oprah's.  Don't be surprised if the producers of WOW WOW WUBBZY who have already present the Flippity Flip frisbee gadget, don't have resident inventor Widget, devise a Flippity Flip Cam 3000 for use of the beloved Nickelodeon children's program.  It is that popular and that good.

John Lennon once stated, "Life happens when you are making other plans."  Now you can capture all the happenings of life using the Flip Ultra HD.

 INEXPENSIVE OPTIONS

For those without an HDTV there is a Flip Mino device that exports to your TV using RCA plugs while providing 60 minutes of standard definition quality at half the cost of the HD model.

For more go to flip.com.

Visual Avenue's Joe Appio reviews the BlackBerry Tour 9630

In this video, Visual Avenue's Joe Appio reviews the BlackBerry Tour 9630. Shot with a Canon T2i / 550D with a 50mm f/1.8 lens

http://na.blackberry.com/eng/devices/blackberrytour/

The Blackberry Tour 9630 is hands down the best BB that I have ever used.  Pound for pound it is probably the best all around phone that I have had as well.

CLARITY

Sound clarity is second to none and rarely do you get dropped from a call on the Verizon Network.

The speaker phone works very well and you can connect to Bluetooth Car Systems such as the one offered in the Mercedes Benz ML 350 SUV.

APPS-

I initially had an issue with the stock YouTube Mobile App. This has been widely reported.

No worries as third party apps like Xenozu give you excellent full screen YouTube capabilities.

www.xenzu.com.  There is also an excellent VZW Music App that allows you to quickly purchase music for download from their vast selection.  Games and useful apps like VZ navigator will assist you on the roads and walking in unfamilar neighborhoods

Camera

You can take wonderful stills and video thanks to the 3.2 MP Auto Focus lens.  Apps like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr provide a seamless intergration for uploading video, text and pix.

Battery Life

The device beats the battery hog Iphone quite easily.  Shutting the Bluetooth feature off when not in use, lowering the brightness and shutting the device off overnight will also increase life substantially.

I use the device constantly during the day for emails, phone calls, facebook and photos and usually give it a full charge every other day.

 Storage

A Sandisk Micro SdHc card will run you about $60 for a 16 gig version.

Cost

The subsidized cost for a Tour is about $99, while the internet non-contract price will be about $400.

Accessories

For a list of must haves, I like the list that Crackberry.com has compiled.  For the list go to:

http://crackberry.com/must-have-accessories-blackberry-tour-owner

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the GPS and excellent mapping feature as well.

I wholeheartedly recommend this unit for corporate America, a blogger or anyone who puts voice clarity and ease of use on top of their requirements.

The design is also sleek, professional and sexy.

Canon T2i / 550D Review

Canon T2i
When I posted my S90 review a few months ago, I admitted that most technology doesn't impress me. Today, I got my hands on the Canon T2i, one of the much awaited cameras for video producers. This post provides a brief overview of the camera with samples and why this is a game changer for the entire video industry.

Canon T2i / 550D review:

Canon has been churning out cameras on a consistent basis over the past few months. The Canon 5D Mark II was a groundbreaking release that allowed video producers to create high-quality video for a minimal cost. See the proof here.

However, for many hobbyists and advanced amateurs, it was still a significant investment. Then, Canon released the 7D, which was also received with much fanfare. And, it delivered.

With the Canon T2i / 550D, the video quality remains the same, but it costs half as much as the Canon 7D and nearly 25% of the Canon 5D II.

The process is very easy. Turn on the camera, go to the video mode, select your settings and click on the video record button. If you're new to creating professional video, it's important to note that you will have to manually focus while in video mode.

Canon T2i / 550D image samples:

Canon T2i / 550D conclusion:

In the opening statement I mentioned that technology rarely impresses me. The T2i is an exception. It is a game changer for those that want to produce high-quality videos for a low cost. And, for media companies, it is a chance to deliver high-quality videos on every medium. No exceptions.

Great test shots! What were the settings used for that last clip? and what lens? I've linked to your post on www.rebelshooters.com.

Hi Karl,

Everything is shot with the kit lens. The semi-daylight video is at ISO
1600. The darker videos at ISO 3200.

Thanks for the link.

We have a Canon 7d. Shooting handheld video takes some practice, as you need to manually focus. But it is proving to be a great extra camera on shoots. However it overheats if you shoot too much video nonstop. Plus the stills are magical. Shot about 300 pics for a textbook recently. The built in sound is not terrible - easy enough to match it up to the primary audio recorded on the Sony HDV cams.

Mike,

I have been more than impressed with the Canon T2i. As someone who shots Nikon, I'm really torn. But, at this point, my investment in Nikon lenses far exceeds the cost of this Canon. So, from now onwards, I'll be travelling with both my D300 and my T2i ;)

I can't believe that you shot those video clips with the stock lens. Imagine what the canon primes could do.
